MORE than 300 acres of land are to be searched by gardai investigating the disappearance of two men.

Gardai from five divisions have joined the search for Eoin O'Connor (32) and Anthony Keegan (33) who were last seen in Co Cavan on April 22.

The operation is focusing on the stretch along Lough Sheelin near Mountnugent.

But investigating officers insisted last night that they had no specific intelligence suggesting they might make a significant find there.

"We know they were there not long before they went missing and we have to check out the area fully, although it is a big task," one officer said.

The operation also involves garda underwater and dog units.

The two men, who are both from Coolock on the northside of Dublin, are feared to have been abducted and murdered by a criminal gang heavily involved in drugs.

Gardai think they had travelled to Co Cavan to collect a debt from a man at his home.

Detectives leading the search said they were following a number of lines of inquiry but were seeking help from members of the public, who may have vital information that could help establish what had happened to them.

They have asked anybody with information to either contact a garda station or phone the confidential line, 1800 666111.

A number of Dublin gangsters have moved to Cavan in recent years, partly because of garda surveillance, but also as a result of "turf wars".
