THE fire at a landfill site that has been burning for a month is finally under control.
However, officials at the Kerdiffstown landfill site near Naas, Co Kildare, have stepped up security as firefighters wind down operations over the coming days.
The Environmental Protection Agency warns that the site is still very dangerous and remains off limits to the public.
Firefighters will remain at the site until the middle of next week but will begin a gradual withdrawal this weekend.
Officials at Kildare County council said: "The fire, which flared up on January 18, was unprecedented in Ireland and it proved very challenging. Initial assessments indicate that by comparison with international experience the time taken to suppress the fire was relatively short given its nature and the environment in which it took place."
