Mobiles fall silent as 02 network fails

Mark O'Regan and Peter Flanagan

THOUSANDS of mobile phone users across the country could not send or receive either texts or calls after O2's network crashed.

Voice calls and text messages, as well as access to email and internet, were denied after Ireland's second-biggest network collapsed.

Users were stranded after the unexplained outage at 10.45am yesterday left customers with only an intermittent signal.

A spokesman for Telefonica Ireland, which operates O2, said it was uncertain as to what had caused the problem. However, the company has ruled out an attack by hackers.

The spokesman said the network was back up at 12.15pm and that the problem was not "location specific".

Industry insiders said the most likely culprit was related to a technical glitch which meant that some mobile numbers weren't registering with the network.

The firm apologised to its customers.
