Missing surfer found safe after storm scare

A WINDSURFER who went missing in force-nine winds was found by a man tending to his ponies.

Search-and-rescue services from both sides of the Shannon estuary were launched on Monday night to search for the Frenchman.

The operation was stood down after the experienced windsurfer swam ashore 5km from where he had set off.

The alarm was raised at around 9.30pm when a friend of the man's called to his accommodation and noticed his equipment was missing.

At around 10.30pm a man tending to his ponies heard the surfer "shouting for help" close to the lock gate at Kilrush Creek Marina.

The man did not require hospitalisation and was later collected by a friend.
