Missing man's body recovered from sea off West Cork
THE body of a young man reported missing has been recovered from the sea off west Cork.
The man, named locally at Mike Power (21), was reported missing by his family and friends in Eyries and Castletownbere on the Beara Peninsula shortly before 8pm last Sunday evening.
Friends and family had become very concerned when they were unable to contact the young man.
A local festival was being staged in the area on Sunday evening and Mr Power's friends became concerned when he did not return home as planned.
A major land and sea search for him was launched and supported by the Shannon-based Irish Coastguard Sikorsky helicopter, the Castletownbere RNLI, local fishermen and the Naval Service.
The navy patrol ship, LE Roisin, was in the area it supported the search effort.
The search also featured members of the Power family and the young man's local friends.
A fisherman spotted a body in shallow water just off the Beara Peninsula shortly after 3pm today.
The body was recovered by the local RNLI lifeboat crew and brought ashore.
The remains were formally identified at Bantry General Hospital last night with a full post mortem examination due to take place tomorrow.
It is understood the young man drowned.
The death has been described locally as "a terrible tragedy."
