Miriam and guests have a ball and raise €70,000 for charity
AT THE height of the boom, they were like confetti -- lavish bashes where guests dined, danced, and most importantly, donated to good causes.
But the black-tie balls, which flourished during the Celtic Tiger, are seldom seen these days.
So for Miriam Ahern to successfully stage her annual black tie ball, in support of the CARI children's charity, at the Shelbourne Hotel on Saturday night, was some achievement.
Raising in excess of €70,000 for child therapy and counselling services to families affected by child sex abuse, Ms Ahern told the Irish Independent she had wondered if she would be able to sell enough tickets.
"We were apprehensive and it was a little more difficult getting off the ground this year. People did tell us they were coming but it wasn't until two weeks ago we knew we would have the numbers," she said.
Attendees included novelist Cecelia Ahern; Mrs Ahern's partner restaurateur Terry McCoy; Yvonne Keating; and Lisa Duffy.
"It was a really wonderful evening and the €70,000 we raised is around the same amount we were making 10 years ago, which is pretty good in this climate," she added.
