Miracle escape for men in light plane crash

Eoghan MacConnell and Luke Byrne

TWO men were lucky to escape alive when their light aircraft crashed into electrical wires and lost its wings.

Pilot Kieran Dardis, aged in his mid-60s, and his passenger Pat Cleary, from Mullingar in his early 50s, walked away from the wreckage when the Samba XL plane came down near Birr, Co Offaly.

It is understood they had flown to Birr from Abbeyshrule, in Co Longford, earlier in the day.

The men were taking off to return to Abbeyshrule when the two-seater plane got into difficulty and crashed near Crinkle at around 4.40pm.

Despite their terrifying ordeal both men were able to walk and talk following the crash, and managed to exit the plane before emergency services arrived. Their injuries were described as minor.

An Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) team was dispatched to the crash scene yesterday evening to investigate the cause of the accident.
