Minster Joan Burton appeals for calm over ‘sensitive’ abortion issue
SOCIAL Protection Minister Joan Burton has appealed for calm on the "sensitive issue" of abortion.
Coalition tensions have emerged over whether legislation should be brought in to allow for abortion in cases where a mother’s life is in danger.
Labour is in favour of doing this but many Fine Gael TDs are opposed.
Ms Burton said that it had to be left to the expert group who were going to provide their report to the cabinet in September.
“I think the first thing that we need to do is to stand back and have any debate on these very sensitive issues in an atmosphere of mutual respect,” she said.
