The brother of a Government minister is among those who have applied for voluntary redundancy under a deal with An Post.

John Daly, brother of Older People Minister Jim Daly, is the postmaster in Drinagh Post Office, west Cork, which appears on a leaked list of post offices where the postmasters have applied for redundancy.

The list has caused an outcry across rural communities as it is expected most will close for good. But An Post has said any community of 500 people will have access to a post office.

John Daly recently made headlines after he pleaded guilty to selling cigarettes without paying duty on them from a shop where the post office is also located. He was convicted in July.

Mr Daly, through his solicitor, declined to comment when contacted by the Irish Independent.

A spokesman for Minister Daly said the minister would not comment on a contractual arrangement between a postmaster and An Post.

Meanwhile, An Post declined to comment on the leaked list of postmasters who have applied for redundancies.
