Mild flu rates nationwide

Q WE are experiencing a relatively mild flu season – even though more people are being diagnosed with the illness across Europe. The latest report shows that there has been just one laboratory-confirmed death from the virus this winter.

Laboratory-confirmed cases provide a snapshot of the spread of flu and they give a good indication of the kind of season under way. Flu activity remained stable in the last week of January with 39 positive cases confirmed – bringing the toll to 167 so far this winter.

Meanwhile, for those going abroad, the European Disease Surveillance Centre said the season of "active influenza transmission has started in Europe".
