Social welfare recipients are avoiding the worst of the rampant increases in inflation, while pensioners, young families and the middle classes are being slowly strangled by rising prices, according to the latest Sunday Independent/KBC Bank Cost of Living Survey.
Worst affected are former 'Tiger cubs' who have been poleaxed by the rising costs of mortgage interest payments, health insurance, home heating, electricity, food and fuel.
Pensioners who had previously been untouched are now also suffering from rising costs and charges.
IN normal times, consumers pay a lot of attention to changes in their cost of living but these aren't normal times. The living standards of most Irish households have fallen in recent years -- not because of rising prices but because of much lower incomes.
