GARDAI are searching for three men who terrorised a middle-aged couple and tied them up in an aggravated burglary at a home in Westmeath.
The raiders, who wore balaclavas and are believed to have been armed with a gun, forced their way into the home at Crookedwood, which is around 6km outside Mullingar, shortly after 10am yesterday.
They threatened the couple and are understood to have assaulted them before tying them up. They then ransacked the home before making off with an undisclosed sum of money, as well as some jewellery and a legally-held firearm.
Gardai from Mullingar said they were investigating if the raiders were disturbed by a third person who arrived at the house while the armed robbery was taking place. There were no injuries reported following the incident.
The men are believed to have made their escape in a grey car which was the same one the three men used to travel to the house.
Gardai were unable to provide a description of the raiders. Detectives in Mullingar Garda Station are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area should contact the station on 044 9384000 or contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
