Micheal Martin to allow free vote on abortion
Fianna Fail will have a free vote on abortion legislation, allowing party TDs and Senators to vote whichever way they please.
The party will not adopt a formal policy for or against the legislation and members will be entitled to table legislation.
The proposal was agreed unanimously at a meeting of the parliamentary party this afternoon.
Micheal Martin opened the meeting by proposing there would be a free vote.
The party is split down the middle on the legislation.
Last week, Mr Martin told the Irish Independent he was in favour of supporting the legislation.
Mr Martin had previously ruled out a free vote on the legislation.
The move is a sign the party leader knows he cannot bring the party with him and is in danger of losing a number of TDs and Senators.
