FIANNA FAIL'S Michael McGrath claimed Leo Varadkar was “self-serving and unhelpful” by calling a scrapping of water charges “wrong”.

Mr McGrath was responding to the Fine Gael Minister's comments on RTE's Sean O'Rourke programme this morning.

The Cork TD hinted that Mr Varadkar was furthering his own leadership ambitions, saying “it's clear there is an on-going succession issue in Fine Gael.”

“We don't know if it will be a weeks, months, year or two but that process is underway,” he said.

“You do have to question why those hard-line comments are made at this time when we are hopefully close to an overall agreement.”

He insisted that government negotiations would not be stalled by it saying, “we're not going to throw the toys out of the pram on this.”

“He essentially questioned the integrity of our party and the reason why are raising issues, saying 'it's all politics'. It's not all politics.”

Mr McGrath added that he hoped government-talks would continue this evening.
