PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins was the star guest at an all-day party to mark the 200th anniversary of a boys' school.

The party started at 9am at St Joseph's Boys School, Clondalkin, Co Dublin, with the President arriving at 11.30am to a rousing welcome from the 405 pupils.

Twelve-year-old Emmet McDonald wrote a special poem, 'Ode to a President', in honour of Mr Higgins's passion for poetry – and received a hug for his efforts.

Principal Niall Desmond said the visit was a huge honour for the school, which first opened on Monaster Road 200 years ago but moved to Boot Road 50 years ago.
