THIEVES have stolen a prized medieval stone baptismal font (pictured) from a Meath church.
"This is a masterpiece of medieval sculpture. It has been taken from a very important church that is a national monument and we must get it back," Dr Ned Kelly, keeper of antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland said. The theft was reported to gardai in Kells, Co Meath yesterday.
The commercial value of the font has been estimated at tens of thousands of euro, but it cannot be sold legitimately.
The font was stolen from the ruins of 15th Century St Lawrence's Church near Athboy and was noticed missing by OPW staff last Friday.
