THE Health Service Executive (HSE) is relying on its staff doctors to assess discretionary medical card applications, rather than outside medics.

The assessment by 13 HSE doctors has raised questions about the fairness of the process which can deny medical cards to people who fall outside normal eligibility limits, even though they have high medical bills.

Jonathan Irwin – chief executive of the Jack & Jill organisation, which supports families of young children with life-limiting conditions – is organising a phone and email campaign to pressure Taoiseach Enda Kenny to intervene over the medical card crisis.
