McWilliams named top economist
David McWilliams has been named the most influential economist in Ireland and the UK by London business newspaper CityAM.
Mr McWilliams, a columnist with the Irish Independent, is joined by several other Irish financial specialists in the Top 100 list of experts who are all active on social media.
Mr McWilliams is the author of four best-selling books. He joined this newspaper in 2005.
UCD lecturer Karl Whelan was voted in at number two, while UK-based economist Sam Bowman placed 11th.
Trinity College Assistant Professor of Economics and property analyst Ronan Lyons came in 14th place.
Reflecting on the achievement, Mr McWilliams said it had come as a "shock".
He said social media was something "he put a huge value on" and the strong performance by Irish economists was reflective of the increased economic discussion in recent years.
"I don't think any country in three generations has gone through what we did in three years in terms of economics."
He added:"Writing for the Irish Independent has been hugely helpful in actually writing common sense economics."
