McMahon's decades of experience

JUDGE Bryan McMahon retired as a High Court judge earlier this year, and was nominated as chairman of the Referendum Commission for the judges' pay and Dail inquiries plebiscites by the Chief Justice in September.

He served in the High Court for four years, and as a circuit court judge for eight years before that.

Before being called to the bench, the Listowel, Co Kerry, native worked as a law lecturer in UCC in 1967, and was also the college's professor of law.

In 1987, he joined an Ennis, Co Clare-based law firm as a senior partner. During this time, he was also part-time chair of law at NUI Galway.

He was appointed adjunct professor of the faculty of law at UCC in 2004 and a year later he was made chairman of the board of the Abbey Theatre by then Arts Minister John O'Donoghue.

He has served as the chair of the Irish Universities' Quality Board and the National Archives Advisory Council.
