A number of community groups in Co Mayo have taken out an advertisement in the national media seeking people to apply to a campaign which will support their candidacy as Independents in the upcoming general election.

The ad sets out "requirements" which must be met for anyone considering running as an Independent candidate in the election, which is expected to take place next spring. These include "a positive personality with a strong sense of ethics" and "exceptional leadership and communications skills". The ad says candidates "without current or previous affiliations" to any political groups are "particularly welcome".

Potential candidates can be from anywhere in the country, but will run for election in Co Mayo under the '1st Independent Mayo' banner. Successful applicants will face questions from the Mayo public in a series of public meetings. The process culminates in a county convention selecting the best candidates to contest the election.

Spokesman for the group Eddie Farrell, who has campaigned on the development of wind farms and pylons, said people "could no longer depend on the current Government to sort these issues out".

He added the group will also approach "individuals with a proven track record who have the skills and experience to give additional choice to an electorate who have lost faith in the present party system".

Ads will also run in local and regional media and online. Mr Farrell said the group recently held a race night which raised €5,000 towards advertising costs.
