Independent TD Mattie McGrath has given a strong indication that he will support Senator David Norris's presidential bid.
Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland this morning, he said "I have to talk to my supporters but in the interests of democracy I wouldn't like to stand in his, or the public's, way."
He said he had received hundreds of calls from members of the public in recent days saying Senator Norris should be allowed to run.
However, Shane Ross still appears reluctant to back Mr Norris. "I am still undecided but I will be making my position crystal clear very shortly," he said last night.
Senator Norris now has the backing of 17 members of the Oireachtas – just three short of the 20 names required to get him on the ballot paper for the presidential election.
