Maternity hospital gets female master
A FEMALE obstetrician has become the second woman to be appointed master of one of the country's main maternity hospitals, writes Eilish O'Regan.
Mother of two Dr Sharon Sheehan, right, will take the helm at the Coombe Maternity Hospital in Dublin. The first female master of a maternity hospital, Dr Rhona Mahony, was appointed to Holles St Hospital earlier this year.
Dr Sheehan, a native of Dublin who graduated in 1998 from UCD, was appointed by the board and has recently submitted her thesis for a masters in healthcare management.
Following internship she went into obstetrics and gynaecology and has worked at all three Dublin maternity hospitals. The outgoing master, Dr Chris Fitzpatrick, said he was looking forward to working with Dr Sheehan in preparation for her appointment.
She will oversee over 9,000 births, 1,000 neonatal admissions and 5,500 gynaecology operations a year.
