EMERGENCY Services are dealing with a massive fire at an agricultural plant in Co Mayo this evening.

Thick black smoke has been billowing from McHale Agricultural plant in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo.

Most of the small town is understood to be affected by the smoke, with the plumes visible many kilometres away.

There had been reports that there was an explosion at the scene however gardai were unable to confirm this.

The Ballinrobe to Castlebar road is closed as a result and diversions are in place.

Gardai have confirmed there are no injuries.

The plant is a major local employer.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Damien Ryan, who is at the scene, said the building “was well and truly engulfed in flames” when he arrived.

“The emergency services are doing all they can to bring the blaze under control. The facility is a fantastic employer in the areas with more than 250 people employed here. Thankfully no injuries have been reported,” he said.
