Mary Coughlan's husband dies of cancer at age 48
THE husband of former Tanaiste Mary Coughlan has died at the age of 48.
David Charlton, a garda, was from Kiltimagh in Co Mayo and had been suffering from cancer.
He died at home in Frosses in Co Donegal last night surrounded by his family including his wife Mary, son Cathal (15) and daughter Maeve (13).
The former Fianna Fail minister (47) met her husband when he was based at Leinster House in Dublin in the 1990s.
Mr Charlton lost a leg in a serious road accident a few years after they married and almost lost his life then.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been confirmed.
