GARDAI are treating as a tragic incident the discovery of a young man's body in a west Cork river.

The body was discovered in a river between Leap and Skibbereen yesterday following a search for a local man who had been reported missing.

The man has been named locally as John O'Donovan (27) from Leap, Co Cork.

He had gone out socialising on Saturday and, when he failed to return home, his worried family and friends raised the alarm. Gardai stressed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

One theory being considered is that the young man may have lost his footing as he walked near the river and slipped into the swollen waterway. A file on the matter will be prepared for the west Cork coroner.
