The management of Oberstown youth detention facility have been asked to appear before the Dáil's Children's Committee following an incident where two youths gained access to a kitchen in Unit 5 of the complex, causing significant damage to the building and furniture.

As staff tried to control the situation, the teenagers threatened them with knives.

A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Youth Affairs confirmed a "small incident took place and is being dealt with".

It comes just over a week after young offenders caused millions of euro worth of damage to the facility after climbing onto the roof and setting fire to a unit.
