A 52-year-old man who died after he was found unconscious on a street yesterday had been socialising with friends in a late night bar minutes before his death.

Frank Grace (52) was in 'Coppers' at Market Square, Portlaoise with a number of friends before he was discovered at 3.20am lying unconscious on the pavement.

He was taken by ambulance to the Midland Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The single self-employed farm contractor lived alone in his home in Cullenagh, and was also involved in the fuel business -- selling turf and peat.

He has three sisters and an uncle also living in Laois.

Gardai cordoned off the area where Mr Grace was discovered and conducted a technical and forensic examination. The state pathologist was notified and a post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday.

Anybody with information is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
