A man who died following an assault outside a pub in Co Longford has been named locally as Noel McGann.

Mr McGann, who was in his 40s, died on Sunday following the attack outside a pub in Foigha last Thursday evening.

The incident occurred about 5.30pm, with the man suffering serious injuries.

He was rushed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, where he died on Sunday afternoon.

A post-mortem was due to be carried out yesterday.

The local coroner was notified.

A man aged in his 30s was arrested in connection with the assault and held at Longford garda station.

He appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice on Saturday morning charged with assault causing harm.

Gardaí from Ballymahon had attended the incident.

Garda investigations are continuing.
