GARDAI are investigating the alleged abduction of a man who claims he was held against his will after going to meet a woman he had contacted online.

The man, who is in his late 20s and from the area, had arranged to meet the woman at midnight on Monday in Strokestown, Co Roscommon.

However, he told gardai that when he arrived at the location he was instead met by a group of men who forced him into a car.

He was allegedly held there for several hours while the gang used his bank card to steal cash from his account.

He was released uninjured a few hours later and made his way to Longford garda station where he alerted gardai to the incident.

Gardai in Strokestown are appealing for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity or anyone who had any information about the alleged incident to come forward.

A spokesperson for the gardai said officers in the Strokestown area were "investigating what is an alleged false imprisonment at the moment".

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Anyone with information on the alleged incident can contact Strokestown garda station on 071 963 3002.
