GARDAI are appealing for witnesses to an horrific accident in which a man was struck by one car and run over by another outside one of the country's biggest maternity hospitals.

The man, in his 50s, died a short time later in hospital. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The horror unfolded shortly after midnight on Monday when the man was crossing the road at Parnell Square West in Dublin's north inner city and he was struck by a car driven by a man whose heavily pregnant wife was a passenger. It is understood the couple were either on their way to the nearby Rotunda Maternity Hospital or had just left it.

Seconds after the man was knocked down another car drove over him as he lay injured on the street. He was rushed to nearby Mater Hospital where he died of his injuries a short time later. Both drivers were said to be heavily traumatised by the incident.

Gardai are anxious that anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have witnessed the road fatality should contact Store Street Garda Station.
