A man is in a serious condition after being injured in a vicious assault in Cork.

The man, who is understood to be an East European national, was injured when he was attacked along with two others in Ballincollig. The other men - one of whom is believed to be the injured man's son - sustained multiple non-life threatening injuries.

Initial reports indicated the trio were confronted by a number of other men armed with a variety of weapons, including knives and clubs. The altercation took place at a property in the Castle Park estate shortly before 9pm. A melee erupted which ended when the middle-aged man was seriously injured.

The other group then fled the scene on foot. Gardaí were at the scene within minutes and the injured man was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH). He was expected to undergo emergency surgery last night.
