Man stabbed in street

A MAN is due to appear before Roscommon District Court today, charged in connection with an alleged stabbing incident in Co Mayo.

The drama unfolded at about 1.35pm outside Dunnes Stores at Market Square in Castlebar. A man was taken to Mayo General Hospital for treatment but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. A 19-year-old man was arrested a short time later and is being detained at Castlebar garda station. He will appear in court today.

€20k in drugs seized

GARDAI are questioning a man in relation to the seizure of a handgun, ammunition and cocaine worth more than €20,000.

The 30-year-old man was arrested following a planned raid on a house in the Poppintree area of north Dublin. Gardai recovered a 9mm pistol and eight rounds of ammunition. They also seized a quantity of cocaine with a street value of €21,000. The man was last night being detained at Ballymun garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. He can be held for up to 72 hours.

Pedestrians warned

PEDESTRIANS have been warned to wear high-visibility clothing while walking to help prevent needless deaths on the roads.

Some 11 pedestrians have been killed so far this year, or one in five of all road deaths. The call to take extra care was made by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Transport Minister Leo Varadkar as part of UN Global Road Safety Week.
