Man shot in the foot

A YOUNG man was recovering in hospital after being shot in the foot in Dublin last night.

It happened at Le Fanu Drive, Ballyfermot, shortly after 10pm.

The 19-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was treated at the scene and removed to St James's Hospital by ambulance.

His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Gardaí at Ballyfermot are appealing for witnesses on 01-06667200 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

'Time' hails Panti Bliss

Panti Bliss is on course to be named one of 'Time' Magazine's most influential people in the world.

Panti - real name Rory O'Neill - is named as one of Ireland's "most prominent advocates for LGBT rights" as part of the public vote for the Top 100 influencers.

The magazine also notes Ireland's Yes vote in the same-sex marriage referendum.

Panti was last night placed ahead of Mark Zuckerberg, Pope Francis and Barack Obama as voting continues.

Two killed on roads

A MAN and a woman died after separate car crashes in Donegal and Mayo.

The man (35) was fatally injured after his car left the R327 near Cloonfad in Co Mayo and entered the Dalgan River at 8am yesterday.

In Donegal, a 30-year-old woman died at Letterkenny General Hospital after a collision on the N13 at Castleforward, Newtowncunningham. The driver of a second car, a man in his 40s, was also injured.

Mazda is car of year

A TWO-seater roadster from Mazda has beaten auto giants to win the World Car of the Year award for 2016.

Not alone did the Mazda MX-5 win the title, it also took the Design Car accolade.

It fended off challenges from the other two finalists - the Audi A4 and Mercedes GLC. The winners were announced at the New York International Auto Show.

The Irish Independent's Eddie Cunningham represents Ireland on the World Car of the Year jury.
