A man was shot a number of times in a shooting in the New Lodge area of north Belfast.

The victim, aged in his twenties, was shot a number of times in the body, police said.

He was shot in an alleyway between Sheridan Street and Donore Court at about 1am on Monday.

The victim is in a stable condition in hospital.

Sinn Fein MLA Caral Ni Chuilin condemned the "vicious" shooting.

She said: "This was a very serious incident.

“The young man was shot on a number of occasions and we could well have been looking at another fatality in north Belfast this morning.

“This shooting was wrong and I call on those behind it to end their war on the people of north Belfast.

“Anyone with information on this incident should bring it forward to the PSNI."
