Man pleads not guilty to murder

A 42-YEAR-OLD man has pleaded not guilty to murdering a 30-year-old woman last year.

The trial of Jason Daly, of no fixed abode, but previously of PJ Delaney Flats, Main Street, Mountrath, Co Laois, will begin today at the Central Criminal Court. He pleaded not guilty to the murder of Diane Burroughs in Mountrath on April 16, 2011.

Homes evacuated over gas fears

HOUSES were evacuated following an overnight fire at a scrapyard over fears gas cylinders might explode.

Five fire engines from Dublin Fire Brigade battled flames to bring the late-night blaze under control at Boland's car dismantlers on Nevinstown Lane, on the Old Swords Road, north Co Dublin.

CHRISTMAS will come early this year for people struggling to find a job.

A new survey has revealed that 67pc of Irish employers are planning to recruit seasonal staff this year -- compared with just 45pc last year. The survey of 412 employers by employment law consultancy Peninsula Ireland also found that 73pc of those intending to hire planned to make some of the workers permanent.

Teen hid shotgun cartridges by sink

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy hid several live shotgun cartridges under his mother's kitchen sink.

The teenager, who has been placed in care of the HSE but repeatedly went missing, pleaded guilty yesterday to possessing five rounds of shotgun ammunition at his west Dublin home, on a date last April. The judge adjourned sentencing the boy, who is on bail, until this Friday. He has been told that he must obey a curfew and not come to further garda attention.
