THE elderly man who went missing from a nursing home on Sunday had only been a resident for the past two weeks.

Searches are continuing for Frank Helly (80), who was last seen at the Moycullen Nursing Home in Ballinahalla, Co Galway at 7pm on Sunday.

He was discovered missing shortly afterwards and searches began immediately.

They continued overnight on Sunday and his nephew, Galway hurling star Pat Malone, has been searching for a second night along with friends and family.

Mr Helly (pictured) has been suffering from Alzheimer's for three years and was anxious to return to his childhood home in Peterswell near Gort – almost 50km from the nursing home.

Nobody from the nursing home was available for comment yesterday.

"With his Alzheimer's he would have been eager to get home. He had walked away from home before but not since he went to the nursing home. Frank was very fit and he loved walking so we're searching all the roads and woodland in the area," said Pat.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Salthill gardai on 091-514720.
