Man killed in van accident

A man was killed after the van he was driving crashed, gardai said today.

The 64-year-old was the only person in the vehicle when the accident happened at Oldcourt, Adamstown, New Ross, Co Wexford just after 2am.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

Four people were killed on the country's roads over the Easter holiday weekend, including two pedestrians.

Road safety chiefs revealed last month was the safest since records began more than 50 years ago, with 11 people losing their lives.

This compared to a death toll of 24 for March 2009.

Gardai said 45 people have been killed so far this year, down nine on the same period last year.

Among the deaths were 22 drivers, six passengers and 17 pedestrians.
