Man jailed over child porn in legal challenge

A MAN jailed for possessing child pornography has brought a legal challenge over remission from his two-year prison sentence.

Simeon Betts (46) is asking the High Court to consider one-third remission based on good behaviour. If he succeeds, he is entitled to immediate release. If given the normal one quarter remission, his release date is December 6.

Granting him leave to bring the action, Mr Justice David Keane said Betts had made out an arguable case and was entitled to bring his action.

Betts, a UK national with an address at Henry Street, Limerick, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography in June 2012.

Limerick Circuit Court had heard that in 2012 Betts admitted having some 50 films and nine images at an address at Church Road, Raheen, Limerick, on March 4, 2010.

The material, found on laptops after gardai searched Betts' home, showed young children being abused in a horrendous fashion, the court heard.
