A driver has been jailed for two years following a 10km chase by Gardaí through Cork city at rush hour while under the influence of alcohol.

Anthony Quilligan, 21, was pursued by Gardaí through the east of Cork city in a chase in which he reversed his car at speed towards a Garda motorbike, collided with a woman’s car and drove through a pedestrian crossing where there were children getting off a bus.

The incident happened around 8am on December 18, 2015, the Evening Echo reports. Despite numerous attempts by several Garda units to stop him, Mr Quilligan continued to evade Gardaí.

He was driving on the wrong side of the road for much of the incident but eventually crashed, which allowed Gardaí to arrest him.

Mr Quilligan pleaded guilty to all charges against him and was given a sentence of three years with the last suspended at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

He is required to undertake an alcohol treatment programme upon release and has been banned from driving for five years.
