A man who produced a sword and a gun in a busy city centre shop in the early hours of the morning was arrested by gardaí at the scene.

The 35-year-old man, who is understood to have been wearing a pirate fancy dress costume, entered the busy shop on Dame Street shortly before 4am in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Witnesses described how the man was refused entry to the shop, and as a result became aggressive with staff.

He allegedly produced a sword and a gun upon leaving the shop.

Gardaí confirmed to Independent.ie that they were alerted to the incident and restrained the man at the scene.

He was arrested at approximately 4am and taken to Pearse Street Garda Station.

He is currently detained under Section 30 OASA, 1939 and remains in custody, gardaí confirmed.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The arrest occurred just hours after thousands spilled onto the streets of the capital to celebrate Culture Night.

The capital hosted more than 600 diverse events throughout the night.
