AN ELDERLY man has died following a fire at his Cork city home.

The man, in his late 70s, suffered from restricted mobility and was reliant on a wheelchair.

He was found dead following a fire at a property on Silverdale Road in Ballinlough on Cork's southside shortly after 1pm.

It is understood the alarm was raised by the man’s devoted family who had checked on him in the morning and had returned to check on him again at lunchtime.

The blaze is believed to have erupted just a short time before they arrived.

The fire was quickly extinguished by units of Cork Fire Brigade.

However, desperate efforts to revive the pensioner at the scene failed and he was pronounced dead before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Gardai and Cork fire brigade officials are conducting an examination to determine the precise cause of the blaze.

However, the fire is being treated as accidental.
