Man in his 50s arrested in connection with bomb discovery at luxury hotel

Gardai have arrested a man in his 50s in connection with the discovery of a bomb in the car park of a luxury hotel last night.

The man is being detained at Lucan Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

He may be detained for up to 72 hours.

Hundreds of guests were left stranded outside Finnstown Country House Hotel in Lucan, Co Dublin at around 8.40pm.

A 999 call to gardai was made.

Gardai and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit arrived at the scene at the west Dublin hotel a short time later.

They ordered that the hotel be evacuated at around 10.30pm.

Guests were forced to remain outside the premises until the viable device was declared safe at 3.45am.

It's understood the device was discovered in a milk churn in a car with a Northern Ireland registration plate.

General Manager Gavin Creaton said that he had undertaken the appropriate measures in order to ensure the safety of the hotel's guests.

A number of guests confirmed to the Irish Independent that they had been forced to leave the hotel premises and were not permitted to return for several hours.

It's believed several members of the gardai were continuing their investigation into the incident at the hotel this afternoon.
