Man in critical condition after boat sinks
A man in critical condition in hospital last night was one of three people who had to be rescued after a boat sank off the coast, writes Breda Heffernan.
The alarm was raised by a couple on shore who heard shouts for help. While the wife immediately rang 999, her husband used a kayak to paddle out and rescue one of the men.
His two companions were then recovered by lifeboats. They were airlifted to hospital where one of the men is understood to be critically ill.
The rescue happened at Audley Cove in Ballydehob, Co Cork.
The three men, all locals, were sailing for Horse Island when their boat started taking on water.
Valentia Coast Guard co-ordinated the rescue effort which included the Shannon-based helicopter and lifeboats from Baltimore, Schull and Goleen.
