Man hurt after chopper crash
ONE man was injured and another escaped unhurt when a private helicopter crashed into a field near a Co Kildare golf club yesterday.
The crash happened at around 4.30pm near Castlewarden Golf Club, not far from the busy N7.
The helicopter, an Alouette 11 Lama, had earlier taken off from Newbridge. It had been flying to its base in Castlewarden and sustained extensive high-impact damage. One of the two people on board was taken to Tallaght Hospital where his injuries were described as "not life- threatening".
Two inspectors from the Department of Transport's Air Accident Investigation Unit carried out an initial examination of the scene last night and will resume their inspection of the wreckage today.
One man said he saw the aircraft flying low over the back of his house before hearing a loud bang at around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.
"It was a very, very loud bang, it sounded like the rotor blades hitting the trees. I wouldn't say he crashed, it just sounded like he was coming in to land when he got into trouble," he said.
A local woman said helicopters were constantly flying past and people used them to commute.
