Man held over woman's disappearance

A man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a woman in the Midlands.

Marie Greene was last seen at her family home more than a week ago, and her mother, Winnie, fears she has been killed or abducted.

The 37-year-old went missing in Athlone on Sunday February 13 at 9pm.

The suspect, in his 60s, was detained in the town and is being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Ms Greene is 5ft 5in and of slim build with fair hair. She was wearing jeans, white trainers and a blue fleece when she disappeared.

The suspect is being questioned on suspicion of murdering the mother-of-one.

A house in the town was searched after the arrest and remains sealed off, a Garda spokesman said.

The Garda air support and sub aqua teams were called in last week to support local search operations.

Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan revealed officers suspect Ms Greene has been murdered.

"We are treating this case as murder and we have arrested a person this morning for murder," said the Commissioner.

"That person is detained on the suspicion of having committed that offence.

"We are working very, very closely with this family.

"This is a particularly traumatic time for anyone whose son or daughter or loved one is missing and we are very, very conscious of that.

"And our family liaison officers are working closely at the moment with the family and in particular the mother of the person who we suspect may have been murdered."
