Customs officers and gardai have seized a haul of a synthetic drug, which is known on the streets as Miaow Miaow.

They intercepted four kilos of the drug, officially described as 4-methylmethcathinone, or 4 MEC, after a controlled delivery to an address in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

As a result of an intelligence-led operation, Customs officers uncovered the package of Miaow Miaow after it was posted here from China and it was decided to allow the drugs to be delivered to the address listed.

The operation, which also involved members of the garda national drugs unit and Letterkenny drugs unit, resulted in the seizure and the arrest of a 28-year-old man in Letterkenny on Tuesday.

The suspect was questioned yesterday under section two of the Drug Trafficking Act.

Miaow Miaow is a former head shop product, described as a synthetic stimulant, which produces effects like amphetamines and cocaine.

Users can swallow, snort or inject the product.

The haul seized in Letterkenny was reckoned to have a street value of €140,000.
