Gardaí seized a loaded handgun and arrested a 44-year-old man in a Dublin city centre hotel when they raided the suspect's room.

The dramatic incident unfolded at around 6pm yesterday at a hotel on Parnell Street.

A senior source told the Irish Independent that officers from Mountjoy garda station were called to the hotel after "serious concerns" about the suspect's well-being emerged.

Gardaí entered the hotel room and found the "agitated" suspect, who is originally from Coolock.

A search of his room yielded a fully loaded semi-automatic handgun and the man was brought to Mountjoy garda station where he was being detained last night.

Detectives are trying to find out what the gun was to be used for and have not yet uncovered what gang the suspect is linked to.

The man spent a number of years living in Northern Ireland and has no current address in this State.
