A MAN who stood on top of a white van, doused himself in fuel and threatened to light himself on fire briefly stopped traffic outside Leinster House this afternoon.

Among the onlookers to the incident – which started at 4pm and lasted around 30 minutes - were Irish rugby captain Jamie Heaslip and team mate Cian Healy.

The man – a foreign national whose identity is unknown, but who appeared to be aged in his 30s – pulled his van up outside the Dail, before climbing on the roof and emptying a two litre bottle of fuel over himself.

He spoke in broken English, and it was unclear why he was threatening to self-immolate.

Gardai were quick on the scene and soon managed to talk the man down and hose his van and the road with water.

A crew from Dublin Fire Brigade called to the scene confirmed the man had covered himself in petrol.

The junction of Kildare Street and Molesworth Street was cordoned off as gardai dealt with the incident, but was soon re-opened. The man was then taken away by gardai, as was his van.
