One man has been arrested after detectives chased armed robbers who held up a bank.

A handgun and cash have also been recovered following the raid on the Bank of Ireland branch beside the Montrose Hotel in Donnybrook, south Dublin.

Two men threatened staff at the outlet at around 11:30am before making off with money in a car towards Booterstown. A number of customers were in the branch at the time but there were no shots fired and no one was injured.

The raiders are believed to have dumped the car at the Seamount apartment complex in Booterstown, where it was set ablaze.

They then got on a motorbike but were followed in a high-speed chase by gardai to Ringsend.

One of the robbers got off the bike at Ringsend Park and was pursued on foot by officers who caught and arrested him. A small amount of cash and a pistol were also recovered.

The suspect - aged in his 30s - is being held at Irishtown Garda station under section 30 of the Offence Against the State Act.

He can be questioned for three days before being released or charged.

The investigation is ongoing and gardai are still hunting a second man who was driving the motorbike.

Separately, a 40-year-old man was arrested over the attempted robbery of a post office on Collins Avenue in Dublin at around 3:30pm.

The raider was armed with what was described as a knife during the botched heist but left the scene empty handed in the direction of Swords Road.

Gardai arrested a man shortly afterwards on Swords Road and recovered a knife.

There was no one injured in the incident.

The suspect is being questioned at Coolock Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
