A man who was found found collapsed with facial injuries at the side of a road in Mount Merrrion in the early hours of Saturday morning has died.

Gardai in Dublin are investigating the incident in which the man, in his 60's, was found on the pavement at Trees Road at around 6am.

An ambulance was called and the man, who lives in the locality, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital.

Gardai were notified by the ambulance crew because the nature of how the man sustained his injuries was not clear.

"It is possible he suffered some sort of cardiac event and fell as a result, or may have fallen and then taken ill," said a source.

"The gardai taped-off the area and examined it in case the man may have been assaulted or hit by a car, but nothing is certain at this stage," they added.

Some bloodstains could be seen on the pavement for a few yards from where the man was found, indicating me may have been able to make his way along the street for a short period before collapsing.

It was not clear how long the man may have been lying on the path before the alarm was raised.

Gardai at Blackrock are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's discovery.

A section of the local Deerpark was also sealed off and examined by Gardai as part of the investigation.

Door to door inquiries were also carried out in the area.
